This subject is taught by our RE Department and is our Key Stage 4 option for students who enjoy RE.

Student who chose this option will take the qualification AQA GCSE Religious Studies A

Course Description

This course involves completing 8 modules split equally between ethics and philosophy. A wide range of subjects are covered and an emphasis on reflective analysis is at the forefront of the learning.

50% of the course focuses on the study of two religions; Christianity and Islam, the two biggest world religions. The other 50% then applies the values of Christians, Muslims and those with other world views to ethical studies, such as; it is ever okay to commit crime, where our planet came from and how we should treat it and if countries should ever go to war.

Classwork is designed to be engaging and offer routes to asking questions of a student's own life, viewpoints and those around them as well as relating them to the wider world. The course is assessed by two exams covering the breadth of the GCSE and testing students' abilities to argue coherently, to think critically, reasons and present multiple views on topics.

GCSE Ethics and Philosophy is suitable for all students who have enjoyed studying the subject throughout the lower school and enjoy writing, debating and presenting arguments in a range of formats.

Who would this course be suitable for?

To achieve in GCSE you must be motivated to think and research. Students must show desire to listen to other ideas and reflect upon them thoroughly. Be keen to learn to from others and willing to help teach, inform and collaborate with peers. Students who wish to succeed must be willing to write extended essays and use literacy skills to present work and show a range of viewpoints.

Potential career paths

There are a variety of different paths that you could follow after studying GCSE Ethics and Philosophy

Most students go on to achieve high grades in Ethics and Philosophy and use these to go onto study further education at A Level and University. Ethics and Philosophy shows an ability to reason and analyse facts which lend themselves to range of professions including law, education and politics. This also lends itself to theology and the core skills needed for disciplines such as journalism.
