Course Description

If you choose French GCSE you will follow the AQA course. This course involves final assessments in the following skills: Listening (25%), Reading (25%), Speaking (25%) and Writing (25%) at either foundation or higher level. You will study the following themes: people and lifestyle, popular culture and communication and the world around us. Through these themes lessons will cover phonics, vocabulary, culture and grammar.

By studying French you will gain an enjoyment of language learning, improve your communication skills and will be able to take part in a multi-lingual global society. A language GCSE builds on what you have already learnt in Key Stage 3.

Who would this course be suitable for?

GCSE French is suitable for anybody who has enjoyed studying the subject throughout the lower school, likes communicating with others and is interested in other cultures. 

By taking a language at GCSE, you will develop amazing skills including creativity, social skills, an improved memory, problem solving skills, and improved future career opportunities.  In short, a languages GCSE will really make you stand out! To be successful in GCSE Languages, you must enjoy communicating, as well as be self-starting, resilient and able to work both independently and in a team. In addition you should be good at spotting patterns and applying this understanding.

Potential career paths

There are a variety of different paths that you could follow after studying GCSE French.

Most students go on to study a Languages A level although some pursue the BTEC vocational route in college, going on to study a level 3 qualification. Both routes can lead to a place on a university degree course. Sandwich courses are also available at university whereby you study a different subject but spend time abroad in another country, either working or at university.
