GCSE Geography is a vibrant, exciting and vital subject which will allow you to travel the world from the comfort of the classroom, exploring case studies in the United Kingdom (UK), higher income countries (HICs), newly emerging economies (NEEs) and lower income countries (LICs).
Study topics such as climate change, poverty, deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use.
In geography you are encouraged to understand your role in society, by considering different viewpoints, values and attitudes. Our geography department aims to educate you to be better and more empowered citizens of the world.
Course Description
At the academy we follow the AQA GCSE Geography specification. This course is assessed only by 3 x 90 minute exams, the specification is split into three examinations.
Paper 1: Living with the physical environment
This paper consists of the physical elements of geography. It covers tectonic hazards, weather hazards and ecosystems from around the world. How we have learnt to adapt and manage the problems caused by the all powerful natrual world. It also includes the study of physical processes found at the UK's rivers and coast lines.
Paper 2: Challenges in the human environment
This paper consists of the human elements of geography. It looks at how the world is changing and becoming increasingly urbanised. How different countries develop and investigates how fair the world is. And with a rapid growing population it covers the issue of resouce management such as food, water and energy.
Paper 3: Geographical

This paper is about geographical skills, including fieldwork and a decision making exercise. It is an interesting paper as much of the content is not known until a month before the exam. It teaches you to apply your geographical knowledge and skills learnt in the other papers. This involves a fieldwork trip, where pupils complete work during the day which is assessed in this paper.

GCSE Geography is suitable for all students who have enjoyed studying the subject throughout key stage 3.
Geography is traditionally recognised as a core curriculum subject, and is widely acknowledged as a strong academic subject on college and university applications.
To achieve in the GCSE Geography course, you must be enthusiastic about learning about the world and look to ask questions about the processes that affect the world around us. You should have an open mind and be willing to empathise with peoples and cultures in many different locations.
