Science (Triple Award)

All students MUST study Science, but there are two pathways to choose from. This page explains the Triple Science pathway. There is also a Combined Science pathway.

Student who chose this option will gain three qualifications:

Course Description

All students will study GCSE Science in Year 10 and 11. If students choose the GCSE Triple Science route they will study all three Sciences in more detail over the two year period.  This will result in students receiving 3 GCSEs - GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics.

Who would this course be suitable for?

If your future might involve further studies in science then choosing Triple Science will be an excellent decision, particularly if you are looking at oversubscribed courses such as medicine and dentistry.

All students selected for this course will be given a comprehensive overview of physics, chemistry and biology. You will be well placed to continue your studies in any chosen scientific discipline beyond GCSE level.

Potential career paths

Students who enjoy the topics covered in, and the challenge of studying science often go on to study one or more of the separate sciences at A level. This can lead onto numerous degree level courses as well as a multitude of career options from research to medicine, engineering, teaching, forensics or environmental work. What's in the course?

You will divide your time between biology, chemistry and physics during both years. You will study the same topics as the students completing the double award, but you will study each idea in more breadth and depth. In GCSE Physics you will study 2 extra topics, Astronomy and Static electricity.  In GCSE Chemistry you will study 2 extra topics that include lessons in Transition metals, Alcohols and Carboxylic acids.

Assessments

Triple Science is assessed by exams at the end of Year 11.

Why study Triple Science?

Studying Triple Science will build the foundations for a wide range of different scientific careers. It will also allow students to cover a wider range of topics compared to the compulsory Combined Science GCSE.

What can you expect from GCSE Science?

Students who choose this option will have extra science lessons each week. These lessons will cover the extra content for the Triple Science course.
